Stanley has always had multiple projects and exhibitions and art sales humming along, some more prosaic than others (buy a mug at the Z store!) but scoring an auction of six paintings at Christie's is a Donwood first. You gotta hand it to Thom and Stanley, getting Christie's to sell Stanley's "early work" as part of the anniversary hype is quite clever. Christie's gets the interest of the younger rich "collectors" as part of its push to attract new moneyed buyers. Donwood gets recognized as more than an album cover guy. And Thom gets to help out his mate. Tidbit I didn't know: A Greek painter, Katerina Vagia, "recreated" Stanley's "Hail To The Thief" artwork onto a huge canvas which was then displayed in the EMI offices in Greece. The canvas was torn into 25 pieces, signed by the band members, (<---oxford comma) and sold to benefit Doctors Without Borders. One of the 25 scraps ended up at Christie's auction in 2005. https://www.christies.com/img/LotImages/2011/CSK/2011_CSK_03135_0141_000(radiohead011833).jpg https://www.greenplastic.com/2004/12/20/httt-autographed-artwork-for-sale/ https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-5497142 Look at what's listed under "Literature" Edited September 25, 2021 by thatthere

Walls covered with ephemera, much like Donwood's Panic Office Exhibition. Thom looks considerably more at ease than his younger self in anything resembling PR. I'd like to see all that was shot, and all the "B roll" shots of the flat. Can I have a day to flip through all the notebooks? (What good are notebooks?) thatthere
Stanley Donwood’s previous auction record was set in November 2009, when “Kabul” sold for £16,250 (about S$30,000) in the London galleries of Phillips. The six artworks will be presented to the public "alongside drawings, lyrics and digital artworks selected for the occasion by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke." chernobyl2
I think it says a lot about their intentions with this reissue/anniversary edition with Thom talking about how throwing himself into art in the post-OKC period really helped, and how art-forward this reissue seems to be. I know there are a few people upset about this reissue in terms of the musical aspect (only a few unreleased goodies) but I think it just highlights how art-focused this period of time is, and that's why the bulk of the stuff is the art books. When you view it from that lens it makes a lot more sense and actually feels a lot more interesting.
section 917
Where or even what would Radiohead be without Stanley Donwood??? It's hard to imagine.
thatthere
I would certainly read a book about the relationship of Stanley and Thom, provided one of them wrote it, which is not likely. From a "News From Nowhere" Stanley email. I wonder if the taking of photos is allowed in this exhibition. Is anyone going? O T H E R M A T T E R S There is an exhibition of paintings that I made about two decades ago at Christies in London that runs from 9th - 15th October. On display are six large paintings made during the recording of Radiohead's KID A and Amnesiac, as well as lots and lots of drawings that me and Thom made, also about twenty years ago. These drawings have been carefully removed from our sketchbooks, as well as from the deepest recesses of our twisted minds, and framed and hung on the wall for people to look at. The exhibition is free to view; Christies, King Street, London, SW1Y 6QT Edited October 1, 2021 by thatthere
thatthere
The online preview for "How to Disappear Completely" is open. https://www.christies.com/features/Radiohead-11846-7.aspx Don't miss this webpage for the bright bold details of the works, and the grid of artwork at the close, which includes some blips. If anyone goes to the exhibition venue, let us know what it's like. The estimate for "Get Out Before Saturday" and the other 5 pieces is GBP 10,000 - GBP 15,000 https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/first-open-post-war-contemporary-art-online/stanley-donwood-b-1968-22/132119?ldp_breadcrumb=back Each of these appears illustrated in color in "There Will Be No Quiet" Edited October 2, 2021 by thatthere

thatthere
"Here I am talking to Matt Everitt on the radio about it, at 1hr 43mins 06secs: embarrassing radio interview" Stanley is actually talking to Matt about the Kid A/Amnesiac artwork on the BBC6 Chris Hawkins show. The timestamp is correct. "We kind of made far too much work, for one record sleeve. What we were gonna do was weld together a load of shipping containers and make it look like they crashed into the side of the Albert Hall. And then fill that space with an exhibition. And it was all looking good . . . well, uh, obviously there were some obstacles. Westminster Council weren't particularly keen."

Just after this he says that this exhibition became the KID A MNESIA exhibition software that is coming..!! it seemed interesting before, but also potentially more of a lark. Now it is close to confirmed that is basically the minidiscs of Stanley and Thom's artwork, and, if the in-person exhibit was going to be so large, i would think there will be plenty of recordings somewhere within too. Picturing Thom and Stanley asking how can we do this...(so much art and music it's sorta overflowing) and coming up with the virtual exhibition as well as the physical one. I'm hoping for plentiful music and audio too, mossy.

thatthere
They are both massive whiners about the artistic process, how it's pretty much agony, except for a brief time when you find it's working ("when you hear a sound, and a voice says that's it, and the light pours in").They were both inspired by a Hockney exhibit of landscapes to allow them to create bigger canvases. They repeatedly rejected the overbearing interviewer's attempt to lock in the symbiosis between them in an artsy manner. They talk around what interests them to each other. They tried a lot of stuff, and went back and forth, without a "plan". They do start recording with an agenda, which they jettison, as work progresses. They didn't edit anything going up online at Radiohead.com which Stanley was responsible for. They just put more stuff out in a kind of "accretion". The internet was kinda "niche" back then, and not about "likes". Fire and ice are the colours used in some works. They both were gutted by an "ice melt" report back in the 90's, glaciers receding etc... "The work is multi-layered, and all of the mistakes are still there." "There are paintings which have been almost entirely obscured, with whatever has been deposited upon the surface. " They swapped sketchbooks, having both studied fine art and English. Grumophone
Interesting conversation, although didn't reveal a massive amount. Most intriguing was how coy they were being about the digital exhibition/game thing which at suggests there's going to be some good stuff in there. Seemed like the interviewer was going to ask one of my questions (although someone else may have also asked it or he thought of it himself) as he started to ask about whether the art ever then directly influenced the creation of the music (Stanley has always talked about how being in the studio helps direct him in what he creates) but Thom and Stanley started talking about something else and the question never really got asked. As it appeared to be recorded I assume it'll pop up on You Tube at some point.
