KID A/Amnesiac 20th anniversary reissue

Recommended Posts

i couldn't remember quite when OKNOTOK was announced; so i have checked it was a month and a half before its release!

Perhaps something could somehow be released during the upcoming winter months!  One might consider that if there will be two volumes with another being released in 2021, for it to come out earlier in 2020 would be a good amount of space between them.

I've been looking back a bit at the sort of Kid A stuff, because the anniversary is coming up, going through the tapes a bit with Nigel. That's pretty crazy. Mostly it's crazy because you're like, how? How did we get that? How? I was listening to Spinning Plates going, "How did we get there?" and then I remember, oh yeah I know, I recorded something on a little sequencer, and then Nigel was spinning it backwards on the tape, and I went, "Wait, wait that's it!" So we turned the tape over, then I remember Colin just put in this weird Rhodes thing on it, and then deciding to record the vocal backwards then spin 'em forwards and then learn it, blah blah blah. How? Why? How? How did we get there? Mental. Sort of recognizing us in it, and sort of... no idea who these people are at all.

The way he says this, and the fact that the sample went uncredited, makes me worry Thom didn't realise that Colin put a sample of an old Isaac Hayes record on it.

I hope they go big with this release.

I will be satisfied with nothing less than 16 hours of material.

It seems plausible that there might be a few versions of this release, one having the most additional recordings?

And they may at some point bring a type of collection of recordings that were not part of the release up on bandcamp to benefit organization(s) once again!

I am in the camp that hopes they do the sorta obvious thing of releasing Kid A and Amnesiac as a combined double album.

Releasing them as separate albums back in the day was the right thing to do, but there's no chance of overwhelming people this time round, we've had 20 years to adjust to these albums. Part of the reissue concept is to acknowledge the studio sessions and the behind-the-scenes stuff, so releasing them simultaneously as a single object reflects the fact that Kid A and Amnesiac were recorded simultaneously. And just the idea of having a monolithic Radiohead double album is exciting, isn't it?

I totally agree, that's what I've wanted as long as I can remember wanting an anniversary release. The ultimate special edition box set whatever for that could be pretty amazing.

There was talk of this being a double album from what I remember.

I hope the mini disk leak shows them

there is a market for the unreleased stuff. Ed even said years ago that kida could be a box set of unreleased material. We want it all. It’s history, and while you might not think it’s great, it’s fucking amazing to hear this stuff.

Likewise obsessed.  Realistically, we won't get the volume of what was in the mini-discs, since it included lots of random and duplicative bits that could have been reduced to 4 amazing discs.   Hopefully they'll do something similar

There is a lot of shit on the discs let's be honest, most of the loud thom acoustic stuff is pretty bad, but super interesting to hear given how much of a perfectionist he is. would happily take 4 discs of good stuff.

I’ve been going through the artwork that we did for “Kid A” recently, and we were angry, reacting to what happened with

“OK Computer”12
12That is, releasing an instant-classic album that repositioned Radiohead as something akin to modern prophets of technological dislocation rather than as a mere rock band. Pitchfork ranked “OK Computer” as the best album of the ’90s.

and determined to counter every positive element of anything that happened with extreme sarcasm. We used to communicate by fax, and I’ve been going through those, and the faxes are scathing about everything, but funny as well, because we knew our reaction was indulgent nonsense.

The shirt that was released, the image was large enough to read Stanley's fax that was on the back of Thom's if inverting the image.  it was not something we had seen much or anything of before!

It really does seem like they had a mixed medium beatnik project going on that partially did appear on the websites and the hidden booklet!  In essence, KID A and Amnesiac are two of multiple potential collections of work that were completed during the sessions.

(I do wonder whether there will somehow be, i guess a fourth EP or album, if including all of the Amnesiac bsides together as a third album to have emerged!

The crying Minotaur represents us, we humans. Caught, as we are, between the animalistic and the godlike, we are doomed to self-knowledge and equally doomed to act out our innate violence. And we create our own mazes and labyrinths to wander within, miserable, unfulfilled, desperate.

(That is from a w.a.s.t.e email sent out today! )
