KID A/Amnesiac 20th anniversary reissue

Recommended Posts

It isn't very good on its own terms, but an interesting view into their process.

I'm honestly more interested in that than unreleased songs - as evidenced by NOTOK, if material wasn't good enough to be released at the time, it probably isn't that good generally. The white cassette was the meat of NOTOK, not the three new tracks.

I think Gawpers is a great title. It's a nasty, spiteful little word, and very British. So - very Thom.

It might be a pipe dream but I wonder if we might get some sort of rejigged version of HTTT one day. All the band members have expressed regrets over that one, so it might be an opportunity to "correct it". Perhaps let Nigel remix it dramatically (Nigel wasn't happy with the original mix) or overdub new elements... seems unlikely but then I was betting against us getting anything like OKNOTOK.

It will be Thom and Nigel conspiring to release Thom's 10-track version of HTTT.

I'd like to see the three CDs released in some rickety, mixtapey 2003-way tbh. Leaked online themselves obviously.

We don't need a remaster or all the b-sides again, they're well archived and easily available online. And sound as fine as they should.

Yeah, Gawpers is nasty, little spiteful word.  That's exactly why I felt that title was a poor match to the song I listened to once.  Does the song sound nasty or spiteful?  Did Thom?

Gawpers sounds like a song title from LP3, maybe.  Thom's song titles may need to be a whole thread.  Those we love and those we . . . think are just out there. (Or both) I wouldn't be surprised if gawpers was some George Monbiot buzzword.  Which is why I'd like someone not named Thom to have a go at naming the anniversary release--that was the point I was trying to make.  Colin maybe.  What would Colin name it?

Thom sounds very nice these days, but not in a nice way. I hope he's not infected by Suspiria and its nice songs.

I do think that we'll eventually get those 3 CDs, I really do. And I can't fucking wait. I bet it's got proto Eraser stuff as well.

That There There demo or whatever (looks like a live take? Early webcast?) sounds nothing like the finished version. Completely meandering. And ya know, none o the drums.

The Where I End And You Begin demo is pretty cool – very neurotic, very paranoid and cold feeling. Reminds me a lot of the Jonny remix of A Rat's Nest or that other version of Weird Fishes they chucked on the website. Pretty sketchy and rough sounding but it really, really suits their vibe. Love the big drums that sound like a jean-button in a tumble dryer too and how high it's mixed. Genuinely think that would've been a better way to approach a quick solo album after The Eraser.

You're thinking of the webcast jam from 2000.

After that, Thom made a new demo of the song which more closely resembles the finished thing, drums and all. According to Wikipedia it was released on the 2+2=5 single, but I can't find it on any video or streaming service. I can only find it on Citizeninsane now: http://citizeninsane.eu/music/httt/therethere.html

Kind of amazing that demo got on a single but the WIEAYB demo (which is vastly superior) didn't.

Because I'm stuck in the 90s (or thereabouts), I still have my CD copy of the 2+2=5 single.  Can confirm it is the same demo Duff linked to on citizeninsane.

“I've been going through the Kid A stuff with the others. We were all a bit mad by the end of that period”--Thom

Great interview.  Excited for some Thom music and whatever the band has in store for Kid A.

The difference between the Morning Bells is still so musically and emotionally compelling; it at least seems like there are more of those pairings in their archive!

I do really appreciate realizing that there could be quite a lot of artwork and ideas that have will not be known until the release, or maybe some of it will appear earlier as with the unique artwork appearing well before OKNOTOK..!!

It took me a bit to realize, but, to some extent this is now occurring!!

It is hard to tell this early of whether it will specifically be clothes (while also revealing and releasing the piece itself), or if there might be some other formats; or when they might happen, this new W.A.S.T.E. situation is intriguing!

Interesting that XL posted a photo from 98-2000ish of the band. No caption. Who knows.

Them just putting out a Kid A reissue out of nowhere and not especially close to any significant date would make a lot of sense. After all it'd be a great distraction from the delay of Thom Yorke's new solo album. Dude just doesn't want that out.

I think it is within the realm of plausibility that there could be enough recordings from 1999, along with writings and drawings, that would not necessarily fit in the main KID A or Amnesiac projects.

It might be a bit more implausible that it would actually become a separate release, to be followed by the releases for KID A and Amnesiac over the next two years, but, it might also really work!  There may be a lot of ideas from 1999 that are not represented on either album.  I have gone to citizeninsane to check out Ed's diary, i didn't remember that a lot of it is from 1999..!!
